We are no Corbyn fans here, though during the years Labour was attacked for antisemitism when he was Labour leader, it did feel something very much like a witch-hunt in many instances.
Led by a dogmatic and loud, minority element of the Jewish community in the UK.
They even attacked fellow Jews, who didn’t adhere to their positions and accusations.
Chief amongst those leading the hunt were the Jewish Chronicle, and a little-known (no pun intended) journalist, Jake Wallis Simons.
The TV personality, Rachel Riley – famous for putting up carded numbers and letters on to boards, on a dead-time afternoon TV show, jumped on the bandwagon too.
During those days, not a single day could pass without the British public being subjected to howls and shouts of antisemitism, within the Labour Party.
However, it now transpires, according to Mr Simons, that it was not antisemitism at all.
And that it was in fact “Israelophobia”:
Israelophobia – which essentially is criticism of Israel. It could even manifest itself in hatred of Israel (not necessarily Israelis) – because after all, it is the central government which represents Israel, that practices apartheid, terrorises Palestinians, and illegally occupies Palestinian land – if one didn’t hate that, then that would be rather abhorrent. This is fundamentally different to other “phobias” – say, Islamophobia, where there is no centralised governing body directing things, and therefore cannot be held responsible as a whole. States are different. One has a right to hate Israel, if they so wish, just like one has a right to hate Saudi Arabia, if they so wish. Neither of these positions means they hate Jews or Muslims respectively. To suggest otherwise, would be highly unscrupulous.
This acknowledgment by Mr Simons, will come as some compensation for those within the Labour ranks, who have long held the view that “it was all a scam”.
