Transcripts of the statement by Ambassador Barbara Woodward at the UN Security’s Council meeting on the Middle East.
“President, the security situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories has deteriorated further to the detriment of both Israelis and Palestinians.
President, the UK supports Israel’s right to self-defence. But Israeli conduct must always be in line with international humanitarian law”.
This is a rather obvious statement – but the question remains of tangible reprimand when Israel doesn’t act within international law.
I have a right to drive on the roads. However, if I break the law, then I will be punished.
When will Israel be punished for breaking the law?
She went on to conclude:
“Finally President, the United Kingdom also strongly supports the historic Status Quo governing Jerusalem’s holy sites and values the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan’s important role as custodian.
The UK remains firm in its belief that a negotiated two state solution, based on 1967 lines with Jerusalem as a shared capital, is the only way to ensure a lasting peace, security and prosperity between the two parties.”
Israel is in constant breach of international law, and will be in perpetual breach of international law so long as a single “illegal settler” remains in the OPTs.
The impunity towards Israel has created a monster with the rise of extremists and terrorists in the Knesset.
But then again, this trend began with the likes Begin and Shamir. Some of its previous country leaders who have been designated terrorists.
